Nicolas V. Sanchez is a first-generation Mexican-American artist based in New York City. He received his BFA from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, MI, and his MFA from the New York Academy of Art. During his time at the Academy, Sanchez was honored with the 2014
New York Academy of Art Post-Graduate Fellowship and has been selected for artist residencies in China, the Dominican Republic, and Venice. His work has been featured in renowned publications such as VOGUE Italia, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, Drawing Magazine, and Fine Art Connoisseur. Sanchez has been in solo and group exhibitions in New York, China, and Italy including an exhibition in Venice during the 2015 Venice Biennale. He currently lives and works in New York City.
His work expresses the nuances of longing for family, land, culture, place, and time intimately familiar to diverse diasporic peoples but universally human in our current historical moment. His contemporary figurative works vacillate between the incredibly realistic as seen in his ballpoint pen drawings and the dreamlike fog associated with recollection evident in his oil paintings and charcoal drawings.
